The Right to Italian Citizenship Print E-mail
Italian law allows the option to acquire Italian citizenship for descendants of Italian male citizens when there is a succession of male descendants with no limit of generations.

The right to Italian citizenship is also allowed if there is a female Italian ancestor, but only if her son or daughter was born after 1948.

Italian government offices in Italy and Italian consulates have the power to award Italian citizenship.

To get citizenship in Italy through the administrative process, one must travel to Italy and register as a resident in an Italian town.

If the Italian ancestor is a woman, or if there is a woman in the family tree whose descendant was born prior to 1948, it is possible to request Italian citizenship via a trial against the Italian government.

To launch this trial, one needn’t come to Italy; one can hire an Italian lawyer as representative by assigning power of attorney and submitting the required documents.
