Even if by Italian law it is mandatory to provide each ancestor’s birth, marriage and death certificates, in Bologna you do not need the marriage or death certificate of the Italian ancestor, nor the death certificates of all your ancestors.

For example, these are the required certificates if the Italian immigrant was your great-grandfather:

Birth certificate and naturalization certificate (or certificate of “no record” for naturalization) of the italian ancestor

Birth and marriage certificates of your grandparent of Italian descent.

Birth and marriage certificate of your parent of Italian descent.

Your birth (and marriage, if applicable) certificate.

All documents must be translated and certified [with apostille].
